A Fortnight Left Before Renewing your Form 2290 for 2019-2020!

The Heavy Highway Vehicle used tax return Form 2290 is NOW due for renewal for the period beginning July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020. The deadline to E-File Form 2290 is 09/03/2019 September 3rd, 2019. Hence, we got only a Fortnight remaining to renew the Form ON TIME! Any tax returns filed after the deadline will be considered as a late filing and penalties & interests may apply based on the prolonging time post deadline.

This Tax Form is generally due by June and its payable until the end of August. However, for new vehicles, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of its first use, which means we technically got 60 days before filing the Form 2290 on a brand new truck.

E-Filing HVUT Form 2290 is simple and easy. The most significant advantage of e-filing is the Turnaround time as to receive the IRS digital watermarked copy of Schedule 1 back only takes mere few minutes. Whereas on the other hand, it takes about 15 business days before you receive any response in mail when your paper mail the documents to the Internal Revenue Service.

Truckdues.com has earned its trust amongst majority of Truckers & Companies in the United States. We steer clear amongst other websites due to our unique pricing as e-filing begins here as low as $7.99. Also, in order for us to serve high demand queries, Truckdues.com will be operational even during weekends until September 1, 2019. Wondering how to claim a refund on your HVUT Form 2290? Here’s how!

Hello there Truckers, the HVUT Form 2290 is an annual tax paid to the Internal Revenue Service every year on vehicle which comprises a minimum gross weight of 55000 lbs or more and if the same truck is been used over the public highways for commercial, agricultural & logging purposes.

If the respected vehicle is used over the desired mileage limit for exemption as in 5000 miles for Commercial & Logging based units & 7500 miles for Agricultural based units then the vehicle turns out to be taxable vehicle and the tax due payment needs to be paid to the Internal Revenue Service full in advance.

On the other hand, if the subjected vehicle seems to be used under 5000 miles for Commercial & Logging based units & 7500 miles for Agricultural based units then the vehicles are considered to be Suspended/Exempt vehicle where the tax due is not imposed on such vehicles, however these vehicles needs to be reported on the Form 2290 in order to claim an exemption from the IRS.

Now there are few claims that are supported in accordance to the Form 2290.

  1. Taxes over paid credits.
  2. Suspended vehicle Exceeds Mileage.
  3. Low Mileage Vehicle Credits.

Claims against Tax over payment:  When the taxes are paid for a respective vehicle more than once within the same tax year, then the excess paid amount can be claimed as a refund by filing the Claim Form 8849 Schedule 6 as a result you will receive a refund check back from the IRS in 21 business days in your mailing address.

When the vehicle is Sold/Destroyed/Stolen:  When the taxes are paid full in advance on a respective vehicle and if the subjected vehicle is Sold/Destroyed/Stolen a partial refund can be claimed via the Form 8849 Schedule 6.

Low Mileage vehicle credit:  When the taxes are paid full in advance on a vehicle assuming it would go over 5000 miles or 7500 miles but if the truck remains under the mileage limit for exemption during the year, the IRS lets you claim a full refund by the following tax year.

But, almost on a daily basis we receive calls from our users asking how or where to report their vehicles exactly on the Form 2290, but in reality the Form 2290 is way simpler to understand.

As per the IRS guidelines, the vehicles which are reported on the Form 2290 are classified into 3 types as follows:

  1. Taxable Vehicles:
  2. Suspended/Exempt Vehicles
  3. Logging vehicles:

Taxable vehicles:

These are vehicles, perhaps called active units which are used over 5000 miles on the road for a respective 2290 tax period. For instance, considering the current period July 1st, 2019 through June 30th, 2020 if your truck will be used over 5000 miles, you must report this vehicle under Taxable vehicles and pay the tax due to the IRS full in advance to the IRS.

Suspended/Exempt vehicles:

These are vehicles which are tend to be used under the desired mileage limit for exemption, (5000 miles for Commercial based units) and (7500 miles for Agricultural based units) which makes the vehicles exempt from paying taxes to the IRS. However, the Form 2290 must be filed on these vehicles though to claim the exemption. Generally the Suspended/Exempt vehicles are represented by the category “W”

Logging Vehicles:

These are vehicles that are primarily been used to haul wood and its derivatives from the Forest to the City using the public highway. These vehicles are not exempt from paying taxes although there is a concession/reduction of tax due amount versus a Commercial taxable vehicles.
