Hey there Truckers, it’s that time of a new year again as 2022! Hope you would have had a blasting new year and a great start for your new business plans as well. As we are aware Heavy vehicle owners need to file HVUT Form 2290 to keep their trucks legal.

1. Form 2290 Deadline:

The normal tax period for heavy vehicles is July 1 of the current year to June 30 of the following year. If you put a new vehicle on the road during the current tax year in any of the months in between, then your Form 2290 due date would be the last day of the month following your first used month. Thus, Form 2290 is due by JANUARY 31, 2022 for vehicles first used in December 2021.

For vehicles following the regular tax period, the Form 2290 due date is August 31, 2021. As mentioned, this would also be the due date for vehicles with a July first used month.

New Update on Name Control Rejection from the IRS

The Federal heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (FHVUT) are reported and paid to the IRS on the heavy highway vehicles using IRS Tax Form 2290. This is an annual tax and paid for the 12 months period between July 2021 through June 2022. For this current tax period the 2290 taxes were already due and paid by August 31, 2021 on heavy highway vehicles that is used from July 2021. For the other vehicles that is used for the first time in this current tax year after July would have a partial period tax or pro rated 2290 taxes calculated on its first use month. For vehicles that is first used in October 2021 since July will have the due date this November 30, 2021.

The IRS Tax Form 2290 is validated when it is filed with the IRS using the EIN – Employer Identification Number against the Business Name as issued by the IRS during the registration process, this EIN is mandate to complete a 2290 taxes electronically. Name Control Rejections are quite common these days by the IRS on all the new Employer Identification Numbers Issued by the IRS for businesses that enrolls with the IRS. This is a new notification sent out by the IRS on the delay in accepting and updating heir system. The IRS will not accept the Doing Business As – Name, dba name as a legal business name.

Hello there truckers, this article is to remind you all that your Pro-rated HVUT Form 2290 is due by September 30, 2021 for the period beginning July 2021 through June 2022. As you are pretty aware of the fact Form 2290 is generally due by June and its payable until the end of August. Else, federal law states that Form 2290 must be filed on a vehicle by the last day of the month following the month of its first use. 

Hence, Form 2290 is now due today, Only for the vehicles which were purchased/re-purchased and been used over the road since August 2021, evidently it’s hard for us to recollect the pace with which the days during this month literally ran off by far and we face just one more day to E-File and pay the pro-rated HVUT form 2290.

Hey there Truckers, Hope you’ve all file your 2290’s on time and done with it . Some customers have brought up questions relating to categorizing your trucks. Some might have filed a 2290 under suspended or exempt from taxes in doubt thinking that your vehicle would not go more than 55,000 miles in a tax year but when you realized it’s going to do more than 5,000 miles and thinking what to do? well In this article we are going to discuss what you need to do when your truck exceeds the exemption limits. Wanted to know more briefly, here it is… Generally, Form 2290 is a Federal Tax Paid to the Internal Revenue Service (U.S. Department of Treasury) which is annually due.

The IRS has drafted guidelines to differentiate the vehicle category by the total gross weight and the number of miles for which the desired vehicle is used over the public highway within a respective tax period. Federal law states, For a vehicle that needs to be reported over a Form 2290 it must possess a minimum taxable gross weight of 55000 lbs (Weight of the Tractor + Weight of the Loaded trailer) and when this subjected vehicle is used OVER 5000 (For commercial based units) & 7500 miles for (for Agricultural Units) miles within a tax period, it is called a Taxable vehicle & when the vehicle is used UNDER 5000 miles (For Commercial based units) and 7500 miles (for Agricultural Units) its declared to be exempt from paying HVUT regardless of the taxable gross weight reported. such vehicles are also known as “Suspended Vehicles” in 2290 terms.

Pro Rated or Partial Period Form 2290 Tax Reporting on Heavy Vehicles

The Federal Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax returns on a Pro Rated basis or for the Partial Period Tax is now due on the heavy motor vehicles that is first used in August 2021. The 2290 taxes are calculated for the remaining months from the first used month instead of the 12 months tax period July 2021 through June 2022.

File Form 2290 for any taxable vehicles first used on a public highway after July 2021 has to be reported and paid by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For heavy motor trucks that is used in the month of August 2021 for the first time since the start of the tax year will be having the deadline on September 30, 2021. This is referred as Pro Rated 2290 Taxes.
