2290 Tax Dead Line is Fast Approaching!

The federal heavy vehicle use tax form 2290 is due and the dead line is fast approaching… mark your calendar August 31 is the last date to complete reporting and paying your 2290 truck taxes.

2290 is due on August 31

August 31, 2016 is Wednesday, your highway heavy truck tax form 2290 return would be due that day. Sometimes you just can’t get everything ready to file taxes by the deadline. So keep things ready well in advance and file your returns accordingly to allow some extra space to correct mistakes if any at the last minute.

For vehicles first used on a public highway during July, file Form 2290 and pay the appropriate tax between July 1 and Aug. 31. For vehicles first used on a public highway during July, file Form 2290 and pay the appropriate tax between July 1 and Aug. 31. If you place an additional taxable truck on the road during any month other than July that was registered in your name, you are liable for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (Form 2290) on it, prorated for the months during which it was in service. You must file Form 2290 for these trucks by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways.

Extension of time to file

Before the due date of the return, you may request an extension of time to file your return by writing to:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Cincinnati, OH 45999-0031

In your letter, you must fully explain the cause of the delay. Except for taxpayers abroad, the extension may be for no more than 6 months. An extension of time to file does not extend the time to pay the tax. If you want an extension of time to pay, you must request that separately.
