Know the difference between taxable and tax-suspended heavy vehicles.
IRS charges Highway Heavy Vehicle Use Tax for all taxable heavy vehicles using Form 2290. Heavy vehicles with a total gross weight of over 55,000 pounds and estimated to travel more than 5,000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural vehicles) are taxable heavy vehicles. So, truckers with taxable heavy vehicles must report Form 2290 and pay the tax dues within the deadline. Similarly, truckers with heavy vehicles that don’t belong in the taxable category should also report Form 2290 for their vehicles but as tax-suspended vehicles. There is no need to pay taxes for tax-suspended vehicles.
Understand the Calculation of Pro-rated Taxes.
Generally, a tax season begins in July yearly and ends next June. Truckers and trucking taxpayers must estimate the truck tax reports for the entire tax year in advance and report them to the IRS by the end of August. For truckers with newly purchased or first used vehicles away from the beginning of the tax period, the IRS charges Form 2290 tax reports on a pro-rated basis. As per IRS regulations, truckers can pay the taxes only for the months they use their heavy vehicles on public highways. Pro-rated taxes work based on the vehicle’s first used month. It has to be estimated from the vehicle’s first used month till the end of the ongoing tax period. In this case, you should calculate your pro-rated Form 2290 tax reports from October 2023 to June 2024. The last date to report pro-rated tax reports is November 30, 2023.
