Vehicle Tags vs From 2290, Is the renewal the same? No

Hey there truckers! Hope you’re current with all your taxes and tag renewals. It’s the start of the year and most of your taxes are up for renewal and the most common question that we face is whether the license plate renewal and the form 2290’s are in the same month, well it’s a big No! Both the taxes are yearly renewal however, the due dates are always different. So to have a better understanding we are going to discuss certain pointers.

Form 2290:

First in order to get your tags done for new or renewal of license plates you need to file a form 2290 and get your taxes paid. Upon which you will receive a schedule-1 copy with a watermark on it. This HVUT from 2290 is normally up for renewal by every July 1st and valid until 30th June the following year. This is the tax year for form 2290s. The taxes are to be paid upfront but not at the end of the tax year. The tax due for the current year is for 1st of July 2019 through 30th June 2020.

Vehicle tags:

Normally the vehicle tags renewal depends on the date of registration. E.g. if you would have bought a new truck in the month of November 2019 the tags will be up for renewal by November 2020. So basically the tags renewal is based on individual truck registration date and no two trucks or truckers friends will have the same renewal date unless you got the truck registered on the same day.

So what would be required to have your tags done you will be asked to supply one of the following about the vehicle registration you want to renew:

  • Title Number
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Vehicle Number

Specific situations require renewal customers to provide supporting documents when completing their renewal process online or in person.

The following situations require supporting documents. When renewing online, you may submit those documents electronically.

  • You qualify for an exemption.
  • You are renewing the registration for a commercial vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 or more (e.g., trucks, truck tractors, and buses) used on public highways.
  • You are a non-resident working in a different state
  • You are renewing the registration of special mobile equipment.

So don’t compare your tag renewals with your form 2290’s, if you haven’t filed your taxes it’s never too late, also if you would have bought a new vehicle by the month of December 2019 the due date for filing your tax returns under pro-rated basis is 31st of January 2020. So what are you waiting for?
