Tillmans was the first photographer – and also the first non-British person – to be awarded the Tate annual Turner Prize. Over the course of the last year, his portraits for us were surprising, poignant, playful, strange, thoughtful, and … It’s safe to say I was terrifically nervous about Skyping Wolfgang Tillmans; one of the most famous photographers in the world. He studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in England from 1990 to 1992. He spent the next several years moving between London and New York with Jochen Klein (German, 1968-1997), a painter.
